Study Guide: THE ANTI-VIOLENCE MUSICAL
The show suggests and demonstrates THE 4CS for CONFLICT RESOLUTION:
- COOL DOWN - acting from anger is
not the answer
- COMMUNICATE- Express your feelings.
Learn to be a good listener and to hear other peoples point
of views. Talk to friends, teachers, and parents about any violence
you see in your daily lives.
- COMPROMISE - Violence creates losers.
Develop a win-win strategy so that both parties win.
- CELEBRATE - Love yourself and be
proud of yourself.
No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.
Eleanor Roosevelt
SUGGESTIONS AND ACTIVITIES
Review the 4 Cs of conflict resolution and make sure that students
understand the key concepts, such as cool down, compromise,
feeling inferior, etc.
Set up mock scenarios in which 2 students have a conflict or fight:
fighting over a book or pen
who goes first?
Bullying or name calling
Fighting over a ball
Physical encounters -He pushed me
Shes trying to steal my boyfriend
Use the 4 Cs to solve the conflict. Let each student LISTEN to the
others
point of view and feelings. Make sure each student restates the other
students point of view. ( see the following ACTIVE LISTENING GUIDE)
ACTIVE LISTENING FOR RESULTS
When listening to a speaker, take the
SOLER
approach:
- Sitting Squarely
- Open Posture
- Leaning Forward
- Eye Contact
- Relax
This communicates in a non-verbal way that YOU ARE ACTIVELY LISTENING.
When you are approached by a person with a conflict, your behaviour will
determine the outcome.
If the speaker is emotional, then you must develop an accepting environment
by using active listening skills:
- Focused Listening - without judging
or interrupting
- Say More- Ask person, Can you
say more about that? or So, what happened?
- Paraphrasing- repeat what the speaker
has said. This lets him know that you really are listening
- Feed back feeling- validate speakers
feelings: I see that your very upset
The goal of the listener:
- Fact Finding- identify what is going on
- Action Plan - find some comprimise
The goal for the speaker:
To move beyond emotion and in to problem solving
